These well paid professionals play an important role during surgery. The individual interested in becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, or CRNA, will first need to go to school to study nursing and become an RN.

The certified nursing anesthetists are responsible to administering anesthesia during surgeries and various procedures. This position is for the individual who has had comprehensive training. If you are working as an RN you can continue to work while studying for your Master degree. You will be required to have a BS degree and at least one year experience working as an RN.

If you are not already in the nursing field you have a couple of options for reaching this goal. You can choose to get your license in practical nursing, or LPN, first. While working to assist RNs and doctors you can begin earning your Bachelor degree in nursing. If you prefer, you can get right to working on your BSN. It is important to know that the RN makes more than the LPN and the increased pay can help to fund your education.

After earning a BSN degree and having worked in the field for at least 1 year, you will be eligible to apply for a Master program. At this level you can become and advanced practice nurse or APN. This is the level of training the certified anesthetist is included in as well as nurse practitioners, certified midwives, and clinical nursing specialists. These positions are held by highly trained professional and warrants serious thought.

The areas of training for this professional require education in pharmacology related to the practice of anesthesia. They include studies in anatomy, physiology, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, and pathophysiology. The clinical training teaches students the different methods and procedures necessary to administer anesthesia during surgery and in obstetrics.

The programs typically take twenty four to thirty six months to complete. When you complete the Masters program in nursing you will be able to take the certification examination. Passing this national exam certifies that you are qualified to carry out the duties of a CRNA. It is important to find the program that is accredited and highly recommended.

Becoming a certified RN anesthetist takes dedication and hard work. Obtaining the advanced degree can be very demanding. Since it is beneficial to continue working in your current position it can sometimes be difficult balancing education time with employment hours. It is important that you clearly evaluate the options available to you to help you reach your goal.

These professionals often earn as much or more than doctors. The significant difference in pay is due to the sensitive nature of the care being provided. These skilled professionals are responsible for administering the proper anesthesia without harming the patient. The care the CRNA provides to surgical patients starts before they enter the operating room and does not end until after they are seen in recovery.
