Credit Card Hotline Causes Next Fight Over Consumer Bureau

By Cornelius Nunev

A proposed credit card hotline is the latest issue to fuel the fiery debate over the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The idea is that the bureau would compile data and complaints direct from customers, and use that information when appropriate. Banks and credit card issuers are concerned with data be-ing inaccurate and not getting used in the correct manner. This would help keep all pay day loan information private.

Penalties for banks and card companies to avoid

A lot of debate was put into the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau before the credit card hot-line was considered. This hotline would make it so consumers can complain about credit card issuers and practices they have, Daily Finance states. The hotline would be so customers can report any abuse that takes place. Then the Bureau would give that information to states to use. The grievances would come from crowdsourc-ing. The consumers would file the grievances themselves. Card issuers could effortlessly get fines from government officials without even considering what the grievances are about. Bloomberg states that card issuers and banks try to keep a private database so that only the few individuals that have to be involved will be.

Ways to stop information from flowing

The flow of data can hurt banks a lot, which is they're fighting for private information. When the CFPB begins on July 21, so will the complaint line. The line is set up so the information could be seen by everyone who wants to see it. That means complaint data can effortlessly be accessed. It is very important to consider that people will always complain about fees no matter what, although banks and card issuers may just want the information private so nobody will know what their dishonest practices are. It could be terrible for the public data to be streaming like that.

Future of consumer bureau clouded

The job of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is to monitor everything involving customer credit. This involves debit cards, credit cards, payday loans and mortgages. However, the existence of the organization has brought on a fight in Congress to break out. There were three bills on the bureau introduced though. Two of these would change who's in charge of it, Reuters states. One of these would give a five member panel power rather than one director while another would keep the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau from having control until a director is assigned. The majority of the Republicans do not like the idea of Warren directing the bureau. She has helped get it set up as an adviser to the White House. The bureau is sup-posed to start operations in July. This might not really take place though.
