Using F1554 Will Help Secure Your Concrete

By Ida Dorsey

Every project has many of its own peculiarities. The F1554 was first introduced in the early nineteen nineties. It covers all anchor bolts that were intended for structural supports to all foundations made with concrete. They can either be headed bolts, bent anchor bolts or straight rods.

There are three different grades, the 36, 55 and the 105 and they are all designate the minimum ksi or kilopounds per square inch of the anchor bolt. These can be roll threaded or cut and the 55 grade can be changed for the 36 grade if needed. Each one comes with a specific colour code at the end so that identification in the field is much easier. The 36 bolt is blue while the 55 is yellow and the 105 is red.

These specific bolts are made from steel that has a much higher yield strength compared to the normal steel. They are more commonly known as the A36M55 and range from one quarter inch to four inches. There are also available in black and can be galvanised as well.

The S1 specification means that the grade 55 is able to be welded through a chemical composition and a carbon formula. If this is not mentioned it means that it might not be able to be welded. S2 is the manufacturer's identification which is everlastingly stamped at the end of the bolt and protrudes from the concrete for easy reference.

This steel is different from the carbon one by the amount of chromium that is present. It is of a gray colour and is shiny, hard and easily broken. It has a high polish and is resistant to tarnish as well as having a high melting point to it. The symbol is Cr and the atomic number is 24 which is a proton number found in the nucleus of an atom in this element.

Rust or iron oxide helps to speed up corrosion by making more iron oxide. As this happens the outer edges of the exposed steel will flake and fall away leaving a much weaker structure behind. Chromium will form a covering which helps to prevent the spread into the inner structure.

Before this process can begin the bolts need to be prepared and cleaned. All of them are first wheelabrated which is the use of certain steel abrasives, so that all hot forging scales will be removed. They will then be dunked into a solution of caustic soda which will remove all organic materials. The next dunking will be in sulphuric acid as this helps with the zinc to infiltrate the top layer. The last phase is that they are flooded in a flux solution so that the zinc will respond to the steel.

In 1988 it was sold again and in 1992 they moved to a much bigger facility where they had 85 thousand square feet. They then bought back the hot dip galvanizing line. Other products that they manufacturer besides these are the u-bolts and tie rod assemblies. You will need to make sure that you have the right equipment for any project you are taking on, so why not use tools and bolts provided by true experts.
