The Basics Of Railroad Track Maintenance

By Jayne Rutledge

In the transport system, the trains have cemented their placed to the extent that many economies could stop in case they were to completely fail. In fact, they have provided the most viable solution to jam in large cities like New York and London. With no sign of being displaced by other transportation methods in future, the current focus is more on designing better performing vehicles in terms of speed efficiency and durability. One thing that cannot escape on the mind of engineers however the railroad track maintenance, as this is can cripple the whole system.

Natural, railroad tracks are fully exposed to the environment and as such are frequently affected by natural conditions and human made factors like road construction work. On natural factors, frequent temperature changes is the main factor although such factors like heavy rail, soil erosion, flood, earthquakes and volcanic activities among several others may also render them unsafe for use or completely unusable. Vibration by the passing train however remains the top culprit.

In order to achieve the comfort of passengers and crew members, minimal tolerance alone is not adequate. For this, the job normally entails determining the most desirable tolerance level that is economically viable. This depends on several factors that must be put in consideration in formulating the standards of tolerance.

This method of focusing on safety and comfort at the sometime must also put in the economic viability aspect as much as it proves to be the best approach particularly on lines used by passenger trains. There are several factors that must be thoroughly analyzed to achieve this objective.

The tonnage and speed of traffic must also be carefully considered. Other than this, the traffic mixed and component age must also be factored in. All these are necessary in formulating the best standards and frequencies of maintenance work as they play a big role in wear and tear.

The commonly used inspection machine is the High Speed Track Recording Coach or HSTRC. It is capable of collecting data on many aspects such as the gauge of the line, its alignment, the dynamic cross level, 5-meter twist, the 3-m twist, both top left and right above and below datum among other measurements that may be necessary. Some of the levels to be achieves are the zero variation of dynamic levels and the least possible variation in alignment from the original design.

Other factors like safety of the passengers and staff are also factored in and as such; violent vehicle movement is discouraged by having as smooth as possible line. In determine the financial or economics of the whole process, the minimum tolerance approach requires that engineers work in an effective with the main goal of causing nil derailment while at the same time focusing on perfection. The main objective is to achieve the highest possible gain in revenue.

The company contracted for railroad track maintenance must demonstrate technical capacity both in terms of experience, efficiency, the technology used, the engineers and the quotation. While you are in the process of making sure the railway system is comfortable and safe, it should not be the cause of delay and disruptions in services, unless unavoidable.
