One Can Buy Stocks In Some Publicly Traded Sports Teams

By Cornelius Nunev

Contrary to popular belief, one does not have to be mega-rich to become a part owner of a sports team. There are some publicly-traded sports groups one can purchase shares in, some of which aren't bad investments at all.

Most American not public

It would be awesome to own a sports team, but most of them are privately owned. That means you have to have a ton of cash to get in on the action. Pink Floyd had the right idea in the song "Money" where it points out that he wants a sports team.

A small number of sports groups, however, are publicly-traded, meaning that shares are bought and sold on stock markets. For not a whole lot of money, a person can buy a share in publicly-traded sports groups and are technically an owner, even if that one share doesn't amount to much. Some are even good investments. However, most are sports teams in other nations.

Fastest Initial Public Offering on earth

Earlier this year, it was announced that Formula One, the world's premier racing series, was going to have an initial public offering in Singapore. Unfortunately, according to the Wall Street Journal, the majority owners of Formula One, CVC Capital Partners, put the brakes on the Formula One Initial Public Offering. However, they do plan to hold it later this year.

According to the Atlantic, an IPO is scheduled for Manchester United already. The team is essentially the New York Yankees of soccer, and it is owned by the Glazer family, according to the Wall Street Journal. The family also owns football's Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Initial Public Offering is being done in the United States, though it was initially prepared for Singapore.

Not all good deals

Manchester United, once trading begins, could be a good buy in the long run, as it is basically the biggest sports franchise on the planet. Madison Square Gardens, the renowned venue, is also not a bad stock, according to Daily Finance, as it has consistently traded above the Standard and Poor 500 market average.

BusinessWeek explained that the American Basketball Association is trading for 5 cents per share currently, which was not good news. There has also been bad news for World Wrestling Entertainment, which is publicly owned, according to Daily Finance.

The average stock is going to do better than some other renowned soccer groups that have been on the industry. Losing streaks lead to bad share value considering game performance determines market performance.

Only one American sports team is publicly-traded, namely the Green Bay Packers. They are an oddity, as the National Football League forbids more than 32 owners of any one team. However, the Packers joined the league before the rule was instated. It's a terrible investment, though. The stock cannot be sold for profit and the team, a non-profit, pays no dividends.
