Elevator Pitch For Big 4 Accounting Firms

By Tom Richardson

If you are applying for the Big 4 Accounting Firms, you are in for a wild ride. These are some of the largest and most prestigious companies in the world. They are global, and encourage people to work anywhere. They work on the large companies and have most of the Fortune 100 companies as their clients.

When applying for the Big 4, the resume is crucial. However, recruiters only obtain so much information from a piece of paper. When they hear your voice, lips, gestures, facial expressions, and clothes they start to build an image of who you are. You not only have to prepare your resume, you need to prepare your personal image and brand.

The resume is hugely important, but people only get so much information from paper and ink. When they hear your voice, watch your lips, hand gestures, facial expressions, clothes, and confidence, they start to know who are you. The importance of the first impression, which often begins with an elevator pitch, cannot be overstated.

In this article, I will lay out two key components to consider when preparing for that first meeting with a professional from the Big 4 Accounting Firms. It may be a networking event, career fair, or interview. No matter where the venue, you need to be prepared. The principles associated with crafting your pitch don't vary by venue, but you may need to tweak it based on the person you speak with and the goal of the interaction.

The first piece of your pitch is the content of the words. You need to make sure you are selling your value to the professionals with whom you meet. We Don't want to tell them you are an incredible candidate, we want to display the fact that you are. You can tell them that you have great writing skills. A better way would be to tell them you are vice president of your accounting society and write newsletters, agendas and reports that are sent to accounting firms on a monthly basis.

The first piece of your pitch is obvious, the content. You need to make sure you are selling your value to the professionals with whom you meet. Do not tell them you would be an incredible candidate, display the fact that you are. For example, you can tell them that you have great leadership skills. A better way would be to tell them you are vice president of your accounting society and have helped grow the membership size 40% since you began the position. That is the difference between telling someone, and showing someone. Make sure your pitch contains the important things about you: leadership experience, school experience and plans, plan to obtain any certification, where you want to work (should be their company or industry).

The second piece is much more important than the first. While the first point is necessary, it will completely fail without the proper presentation. There is an adage that 95% of communication is non-verbal. While we do not need to argue on the percentage, we know it is significant. How you dress, your hairstyle, facial expressions, hand movements, eye contact and everything else you do will be noticed. These are the essential pieces of your presentation. While they will judge you on what you say, they will judge you even more by how they feel when they are in your presence.

However, a better way is to show them by saying you are president of your accounting organization and have helped grow the membership size 60%, partnered with a local community service organization, and won regional conference competitions. That is the difference between telling someone you are a great leader, and showing them.

While I can not possibly cover every piece you will need to succeed here, I can promise you that practice makes perfect. Practice your content and your presentation and you will impress any professional that comes your way. For more information, check out my 8 step guide to crafting an elevator pitch at my website.
