How To StArt a Farmer's Stand

By George Dodson

When you are driving your car, have you noticed a small stand sitting at the side of the road? Someone was selling something such as tomatoes, cantaloupe, or some other form of vegetable and fruit.

Those little farmer stands are very important in some communities especially rural ones. Fruits and vegetables are being sold in their freshest condition. If it is not consumed after a certain time it gets destroyed or spoiled. It is for this sole reason that farmers make an effort to build a farmer stand to get rid of their fresh produce while earning income. Since the produce are fresh, goods sold on farmer stands taste much better then from those sold at supermarkets. Most of the time, they are fresh and are free of pesticides and other contaminants.

If you're living in a rural place and grow your own produce, how would you be able to set up a farmer stand?

Among those that you want to consider first is the location. Would you like to set up your stand at the local farmers market? If you choose to establish your stand at the local market you will need to pay a small fee for the location. Consequently, you will also be working with other competition who probably sells the same things as you do. Setting your stand at the end of the driveway is also a good idea. Travelers can easily notice your sign of your stand. In a parking space, travelers will be able to inspect your goods.

What is the ideal produce to sell? What are the produce commonly bought by travelers? Among those that travelers love to purchase from farmer stands are fruits such as apples and oranges and vegetables such as tomatoes, corn and cantaloupe. You will be looking at a good opportunity to profit if you decide this selection.

When would you like your farm stand to be established? What is the best time of the week and of the day? Is it in the evening or the morning? Conducting a test would probably best in this situation. You can simply ask competitions for tips or advise. If not, you can simply browse the net about this topic. Surely there are other farmers who have run farm stands who had that information.

How much would you charge for your goods or merchandise? Probably the best advice is to keep prices low. An example would be $.50 apiece or some two-fers You can also sell by the box or carton depending on the produce your advertising.

You can start off with a little amount of produce goods to sell and monitor how it will be selling. As you progress you can add items one at a time until you get a really good feel of what people want. That way you've not overcommitted yourself, and know that you have enough inventory to meet your customer's needs.
