Getting The Most Out Of Class

By Jason Larrsohn

The day has finally come, you have graduated from high school, you are an adult, and you are free. All of your years of hard work and practical servitude are about to pay off, so what do you do next? The options are next to endless, but one of the most common and exciting is the opportunity to attend college.

But perhaps we should rewind a couple of years, so you can really take some time to prepare, and choose the kind of college experience that will work best for you and your goals. Choosing a college and a career path will help you to have a college experience that is exactly the way you want it to be.

The best way to get the most out of a class is to read and annotate your required reading. It is tempting not write in your text books because you wish to sell back to the books store for the highest price possible.

College has the potential to be one of the best experiences of your life, so prepare today to make that possibility a reality, and knock the socks off college. The choice is yours, so take this opportunity to choose a college experience that will make you happy and prepare you for a future of following and achieving your dreams.

On the same lines as tip number one, try to contact your future roommates and see what they will be bringing. Don't go out and buy a toaster, pots and pans, silverware, a TV, and other sharable items if your roommates already have them. But make sure that if they are bringing these items that they are willing to share. There is the occasional paranoid/selfish roommate who won't let you touch their pots or pans. So coordinate with your roommates and split up buying the any needed appliances/equipment. This will save all of you a lot of money and packing space.

Another tip to getting most out of class includes taking good notes, preferably by hand. Studies have shown you are more likely to remember something if you have written it down-not typed it out. While you are writing your notes, it is a good idea to write any question or personal conclusions you gain in the margins.

And once you have decided what and where you want to go, you should take the opportunity to set short and long term goals to help you achieve your dreams. Although wearing Arizona State apparel is a great step, it is not the only step in working towards attending the right school.

As you set and meet goals, you will be able to measure your progress and avoid becoming discouraged. When progress is measurable, you have the opportunity to literally watch yourself grow and extend your reach as you come closer and closer to the attainment of your goal.

In the end, the real secret with getting the most out of class is not giving up and participating. Sure the kid in the Florida State jersey is annoying and the teacher sound like Ben Stein in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," but this your education, and isn't cheap, so don't quit.
