Employers looking for qualifications in certain industries

By Marge Jenkins

The health and safety (H&S) industry has experienced a growth rate over the last 10 years. A lot more positions are currently available. New research indicates that another area has experienced a large growth rate also; applicants without the pre-requisite job qualifications. Employers recognise this trend and no longer grant interviews to non-qualified applicants.

H&S employers know the credentials that potential employees need to perform their duties. They have improved their hiring practices to the level that only three in 100 nationally advertised vacancies do not specify necessary qualifications for the positions. This increased awareness is supported by a 2011 National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) Job Barometer.

For 14 days in 2011, March 23-April 6, NEBOSH representatives examined 100 job advertisements for H&S advisors and managers. In total 93 of the advertisements specifically listed a requirement for a NEBOSH qualification and/or a Tech level or higher membership in the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). Of the 93 jobs, 66 vacancies mentioned the applicant must have at one NEBOSH qualification for employment.

There are three levels of IOSH membership, Tech IOSH, Grad IOSH and Charter Membership (CMIOSH). All three membership levels require accredited qualifications. Of the 100 advertisements examined 48 mentioned qualifications involving various levels of IOSH membership. Tech IOSH was referenced in five positions, Grad IOSH was specified for 17 positions and the remaining 26 positions specified CMIOSH.

Amongst the jobs advertised, £45,000 was the average top salary. Of the 100 jobs announced, 29% were located in London, 28% in the Home Counties and South East and 39% in other regions. The remaining 4% were flexible and non-specific for their employment locations. More than 50% of the jobs had requirements for travel throughout the UK and to overseas locations. With the wide range of available jobs and locations, individuals with the required qualifications have plenty of employment opportunities.

Having suitable qualifications helps anyone looking for a position as an H&S advisor in the UK. Without credentials, employment in this field is hard to obtain. Taking NEBOSH accredited training will help to get a job. Employers can help increase their workplace skills and capabilities by sending select employees for advanced training.

The 2011 two week NEBOSH examination revealed several improvements from their April 2010 Job Barometer. Some 62% H&S jobs announced had responsibility for environmental management listed; this was an increase of 7% from 2010. Also, 53% of the job titles included environment, an 11% growth from 2010. The terms quality, facilities, risk management, assurance, and well-being were added to job titles and responsibilities.

The 100 positions studied was a small sampling with a lot of details which provides a good snapshot of the H&S workplace today. Qualifications are being emphasised for individual career advancement. This is also true for companies needing qualified personnel to manage risk assessments when necessary. Current career personnel need to know which qualification certificates are needed, which certificates are right for their personal career goals and where to earn those certificates.
